CHAPTER 1: The Paper That Did Not Match the Roads

TalesHub Reader Mode

Callen Ward noticed the map because it did not make sense.

It lay unfolded on the long table at the back of the town archive, its edges weighted down by smooth stones. The paper was thick, yellowed, and clearly old—but the ink looked recent, dark and steady, as though the hand that drew it had not rushed.

Callen leaned closer.

The map showed Northmere.

Or something like it.

The river was there, but slightly shifted. The main road bent where it should have gone straight. Several buildings were marked that did not exist—at least, not anymore.

And yet, none of it felt wrong.

“You’re holding it upside down,” said a voice.

Callen turned.

An older woman stood near the shelves, arms crossed loosely, watching him with mild interest.

“I don’t think I am,” Callen replied.

She smiled. “That’s usually how it starts.”

Callen rotated the map anyway.

It still did not align with reality.

“What is this?” he asked.

“A record,” the woman said. “Not of places. Of pauses.”

Callen frowned. “Pauses?”

“Moments when people stood somewhere long enough for it to matter.”

Callen had come to Northmere to catalog documents, not inherit mysteries. He had accepted the temporary assignment because it was quiet, predictable, and unlikely to surprise him.

The map disagreed.

Later that afternoon, Callen walked the town with the map folded carefully in his bag.

At the crossroads near the old mill, he stopped.

The map marked a symbol there—a small circle, drawn lightly.

Nothing else.

Callen stood still.

For no clear reason, he waited.

A minute passed.

Then another.

A breeze moved through the trees. Someone crossed the road and nodded at him. A distant sound—metal striking metal—rang once and faded.

Callen felt something settle.

Not resolve.

Recognition.

That evening, back at the archive, the map had changed.

A thin line now extended from the circle at the crossroads.

It led nowhere yet.

Callen closed the map slowly.

Whatever this was, it had noticed him.
